I met Matthew Eck last year at AWP. He stood next to me at the bar as we ordered beers, and we began chatting. Before I knew it an hour had passed. A recent graduate of the University of Montana MFA in Creative Writing Program, Eck had just returned from dinner with representatives from his publisher, Milkweed Editions. I had such a pleasant time chatting with him about his book, the military, and MFA programs (at the time I was awaiting decisions on my applications from several programs) that I preordered his book when I returned home from the conference. The book, The Farther Shore, arrived a few weeks ago on a day I didn't have classes. So I opened it up and started reading. I finished it in that single sitting. I recommend it without hesitation.
